Advice for bobbing my bed...........

I'm a welder / fabricator, but not a body man by any means. I have very little experience (self taught at that) working with thin sheetmetal. It’s pretty obvious I need to cut the thing apart and weld it back together. But beyond the obvious, does anybody have any pointers for me? I'm going to shorten it by about 12" or so.

Here's where it started.

After a little trim, got me thinking...........

cut it and leave yourself 1/2" extra... get a lapping/offset crimping tool that looks like a vice grip but with stepped jaws and then take the extra 1/2" and put the lip in it, take the other half and put it on top of the offset metal and then you have a place to rivet and use structural adhesive. do that as much as you can and just leave a little extra material in the corners that you can work into them and then fill the rest of the gaps with some bondo and it'll look like you never did any work on the out side and it'll be super strong so you dont have to worry about it.

for the actual bed sectionn I wouldnt cut the floor... I'd leave the floor alone and just shorten the end of it and make the tail gate area over again and then the bed wont have a goofy gap or seam right at the back of it.

I'm pleased with the end result.

Pic whore time. :)

I think the bob turned out pretty well. Now I need to get some paint on that ugly frame and get a new rear bumper built.

Thanks. Took about 3 frustrating days of my time. Then I had my neighbor do all the bondo and paint work.

What are you referring to? I don't see anything that is goofy or twised up under the back of the bed.

Why am I a poseur?
